Chapter History - Tallahassee, Florida

The Tallahassee Chapter of NHBW, Inc was founded in 1978 under the direction of Dr. Edith Fresh who served as the first President.  The charter members are Mrs. Gayle Andrews, Dr. Diane Avery Brown, Mrs. Shirley Gooding-Butler, MS. Dejoyce McRoy, Mrs. Zellene Smith and Dr. Patty Ball-Thomas.  These concerned women saw a need for an active and collective voice on women’s issues in Tallahassee community.  The stated purpose was to represent those individuals, organizations and institutions whose goals were to foster and promote economic, social, and educational development of black women, black communities and to maintain a communication network among them.  Within the goals and philosophies of NHBW, the Tallahassee chapter has instituted community outreach programs that are inclusive of all people.
