Chapter History - Gadsden County, Florida

On June 25, 1994, a Workshop for displaced homemakers was held at the local technical high school in Quincy, Florida. Among the presenters were four members of the Tallahassee Chapter of the National Hook-UP of Black Women, Inc., Ms. Shirley Jones, Dr. Bertha Murray, Dr. Deidre Powell and Dr. Juanita Williams. Impressed with the presentations by these women and the mission of the National Hook-up of Black Women, Inc. (NHBW), several women in attendance approached Ms. Geneva Westley, Southern Regional Coordinator. These women were, Sarah Figgers, Lakaye Austin and Cynthia Walker, about establishing a chapter in Gadsden County. However, it was not until 1995 that the plan came to fruition.
